Impacts of Acidic Oceans on Shelled Organisms: Carbonate in Acidic Conditions (Oceans)

Overview

Students will learn through experimentation that ocean acidification weakens the calcium carbonate structures found in shells of marine organisms, including those within our diet.

Activity Type:

Lesson

Target Grade Level:

3-5, 6-8, 9-12

Estimated Duration:

40 minutes

Topics:

Food Systems, Oceans

Possible Connections to NGSS

Performance Expectations

MS-PS1-2: Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.

MS-LS2-4: Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations.

MS-ESS3-4: Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth’s systems.

HS-ESS2-5: Plan and conduct an investigation of the properties of water and its effects on Earth materials and surface processes.
