Every year, an immersive education workshop for children is held by the DUNAS partners. This year, an entire day was dedicated to engaging youth through field trips to the dunes and nearby archaeological sites, and by hands-on activities where they can be part of the solution. Este año, el taller fue auspiciado por el proyecto DUNAS, el mismo se llevó a cabo de una manera diferente a los años anteriores debido al COVID, pero siguiendo los mismos principios de educación y contacto directo con la naturaleza. Como parte de las actividades planeadas para los niños de 8 a 12 años se dedicó un día completo al proyecto DUNAS. Ese día, se discutió con ellos acerca del calentamiento global y sus efectos sobre las costas. Se llevó a los participantes a ver el trabajo que se está realizando para restaurar la duna #1. En esta visita tuvieron la oportunidad de ver los sistemas de biomimética, la vegetación y fauna asociadas a las dunas; pero lo más importante es que pudieron ver los efectos del impacto de huracanes en la costa. Los participantes están bien conscientes del gran impacto que tuvo el huracán María en el 2017 y como el calentamiento global hasta cierto punto ayudó al desarrollo de los sistemas atmosféricos que ocurrieron ese año y lo que ha estado ocurriendo en la actualidad.
This year the workshop was sponsored by the DUNAS project, but was carried out in a different way from previous years due to COVID, but still following the same principles of education and direct contact with nature. As part of the activities planned for children from 8 to 12 years old, a full day was dedicated to the DUNAS project. That day, we discussed with them global warming and its effects on the coasts. The participants were taken to see the work being done to restore dune #1. On this visit they had the opportunity to see the biomimetic systems, the vegetation and fauna associated with the dunes, but the most important thing is that they were able to see the effects of the impacts of the hurricanes on the coast. They are aware of the impact that hurricane Maria had in 2017 and how global warming to some extent helped the development of the atmospheric systems that occurred that year and what has been happening today.
Como segunda parte del día, los participantes visitaron el sitio arqueológico de Machuca. Esta visita fue con un propósito doble. Primeramente, para hablarles sobre parte de la historia de nuestros ancestros indígenas y segundo para mostrarles como la subida del nivel del mar por causa del cambio climático está poniendo en peligro nuestros recursos culturales. Desde el sitio arqueológico se puede ver la comunidad de La Boca en el municipio de Barceloneta, en este punto pudieron ver como el mar ha afectado a las personas que viven frente al mar. En esta parte aplicaron lo aprendido en la duna #1 sobre la importancia de ellas en las costas y como estas son parte del sistema natural de defensa de la costa.
As the second part of the day, the participants visited the archeological site of Machuca. This visit was for a dual purpose. First, to talk about the history of our indigenous ancestors and second to show how the sea level rise due to climate change is putting our cultural resources at risk. From the archeological site, we can see the community of La Boca in the municipality of Barceloneta, at this point they could see how the sea has affected the community. In this part they applied what they learned in dune #1 about the importance they have on the coast, and how they are part of the natural systems of defense of the coast.
Como última actividad los participantes se expresaron a través del arte, pintando maderas para crear un sistema nuevo de biomimética en la duna#1.
As a last activity, the participants expressed themselves through art, painting wood to create a new biomimetic system in dune #1.
